Alternatively you could visit our website www.sourtonvillagehall.org.uk Kathy Fogerty Secretary Beating the bounds is an ancient custom which takes place every seven years to confirm Commoners’rights. A group of old and young members of the community walk the boundaries of the parish, usually led by the parish priest and church officials, to share the knowledge of where they lay, and to pray for protection and blessings for the lands. This is a great community event and day out, especially if the weather is good.
This year the Beating of the Bounds takes place on Monday 30th May and starts at Iron Catch Gate Sourton at 10.00 am. Iron Catch Gate can be reached from the path up to the moor by Sourton Church. The walk is about 6 ½ miles over open moorland and although the walk is at a gentle pace there is a steep climb from Sandy Ford to Kitty Tor. Dartmoor Rescue Group will bring up the rear in case of slower walkers and injuries. The walk usually takes about 3 hours and refreshments of pasties, sausage rolls and cake as well as tea, beer or a soft drink will be served at Nodden Quarry, behind the Fox and Hounds courtesy of Bridestowe Commoners. Children under 16 who live in the Parish of Bridestowe will receive a memento at the end of the walk, so make sure you give your name in. Certificates are also available to everybody at the end of the walk to say that you have completed it. Why not make a date and join us for this great historical custom. |
